George Town, Exumas

Our impression of George Town is somewhat mixed.  The Yachtsman's Guide to the Bahamas describes the situation: "There are many nice anchorages in the harbor, although the best are at Stocking Island.  Unfortunately, however, these anchorages are often overcrowded with boats that seem to have become permanent fixtures.  If you listen to the chatter on the VHF, all they seem to do is make arrangements for cocktail parties and tell why it is impossible for them to do anything except stay anchored where they are.  They seem to always have a broken something-or-other that prevents them from going anywhere.  So, don't have high expectations of anchoring here."

On the plus side, it's a very safe harbor and, compared to most of the out-islands, has an ample supply of groceries, produce and hardware goods.  There is even a full service boat yard with haul-out facilities.  Blue Hole

Tucked into the corner of a Stocking Island anchorage we found a Blue Hole Cave that appears to go under the island. We brought in dive gear, but about 30 feet down the current had a strong pull into the hole, so we aborted the dive. Perhaps another day at slack tide we'll try again.

Walking back from town one evening, a familiar sailboat caught our eye.  The Morning Star, one of BlackBeard's dive sloops, and our former employer, came into port for a two week lion fish survey. It was nice seeing some old friends & co-workers in an unexpected place.
