Guadeloupe - Waterfalls and Volcanos
J
uly 3, 4 & 5 2010

The past few days we traded salt water for fresh water, we climbed instead of sailed.  Guadeloupe has surprised us with it's wonderful French culture and we have been taking advantage of all that the rain forest and rivers have to offer.  With an active volcano, a thriving rain forest and multiple waterfalls to explore - it's a shame most sailors skip Guadeloupe as a destination.

Here is a video of Anne sliding down a "natural" waterslide up in the rain forest:

Anne jumping off the rocks into the pool  Anne climbing down the River Grande Plaine  Anne holding on  Don't fall over the edge - rocks!  Anne under the source of a waterfall
Anne jumping into waterfall pools and playing in the rivers...

Not sure who - blasted by a mini waterfall Chris going up the wet slippery rocks to jump off Chris on top of Cascade Acomat Chutes du Carbet
Chris awash in the falls and climbing through the rushing water...

Mount Soufriere Volcano (active)
Another long, arduous hike, but this time we were not greeted with a cool cascade of water - but a blast of hot molten ash that was spewing out from the Mount Soufriere Volcano.  Add to that, winds from a tropical wave (up to 40 knots!) and rain all day.  Those are the ingredients for a very perilous climb.  The reward at the end of the climb was a large "hot tub" that had a constant flow of water warmed by the volcano.

Cold, Wet and trying to take shelter between the sides of the trail during a rain squall The side of the volcano was covered in beautiful moss Inside the crater - blowing out hot sulphur gas into our faces... A volcano heated hot tub
