St. Kitts, Mount Liamuiga
June 2010

When the wind and the seas pick up, we head inland.  Armed with some basic information about a climb to a dormant volcano, we set out, on our own, for Mount Liamuiga.

Over Rocks, Under Fallen Trees... Wet and Tired Stopping to rest Green, green, green butterfly

The locals tried to discourage us, claiming that the hike was too difficult to attempt without a trained guide for $100 US per person - but we didn't listen and set out to find the mountain.

Climbing the last bit of trail Anne at the top The Peak We made it!

We started out in the morning walking through a sugarcane field toweard the rainforest.  After a couple miles of endless fields of sugarcane, we found a trail head into the forest.  It was 2.5 miles and 3700 feet climbing rocks, roots, hiking up waterfalls surrounded by lush tropical trees and plants.

Impressive tree root system  We did drink the water... but this is a bit much Deep in the Jungle Wet, tired and still not to the top

After chasing vervet monkeys through the low altitude forest, we assended into the clouds where it rains continuously.  When we reached the volcano rim we saw the spectacular views of the canopy and the dormant volcano crater below.  The center of the crater is filled with water.  It's been dormant for many, many years so the walls of the crater have been taken over by rainforest.

Some clouds came in Top of the dormant volcano Clouds decending into the volcano crater At the summit

The hike was spectacular and it is absolutely possible to go without a guide!  The hike/climb is moderate and requires one to be in good physical condition. For more information or detailed instructions on how to explore Mount Liamuiga on your own terms, contact us.
